FAMOUS WINDMILLS

Row 1
Windmills are arguably the most famous landmark of Mykonos. They stand tall and show off their unpretentious elegance to all travelers reaching the islands. Dating back to the 16th century, windmills are much more than architectural wonders of simplicity and functionality. They represent an entire era, an era where the Cycladic island of Mykonos was a commercial center and the locals needed to come up with ways to produce and process their merchandise.
Mykonos is otherwise called the Island of Winds, due to the distinctive and intense winds blowing throughout the year. This is why the windmills were the obvious choice, when the Mykonians looked for the most efficient way to work. However, nowadays their use has changed. They are now details depicting the history and thriving past of Mykonos, always shining with their plain beauty and Cycladic flair upon the island.
You may access some of the best preserved windmills at Kato Myloi, with a stunning view from above to the Aegean Sea and Mykonos. Take photos and see from up close how the Mykonians benefited from renewable sources of energy, embracing sustainability and forging their own future with what they had at hand. The island's history and background!
